Who: Black lived in Winston-Salem from the late 1800s until his death in 1980. He was known for crafting handmade bricks in his backyard using 18th- and 19th-century techniques.

Impact: His bricks appear throughout Winston-Salem! They were used in the original NC Baptist Hospital (“Old Main”), R.J. Reynolds Tobacco’s buildings, and even the sidewalks of Old Salem.

Preserved: The George Black House and Brickyard was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, and the City of Winston-Salem installed a historic marker at the site in 2007.
