In 1903, back when Winston and Salem were two separate towns, a small group of local businessmen had a straightforward idea: help everyday families buy a home and build financial security.
The first savings plan started at 25 cents a week, because that was what most families could realistically afford. The bank was built around them, not the other way around, and they've been loyal to that idea ever since.
1903: Piedmont Building & Loan opens its doors in Winston-Salem.
1930s: The Great Depression hits and not one dividend payment is missed, and not one depositor loses a penny.
1970: Assets pass the $100 million mark, and the bank president marks the milestone with a letter of gratitude to every employee.
1980s: Services expand to include checking accounts and CDs, giving customers more ways to manage their money in one place.
2022: Piedmont Federal crosses $1 billion in assets, 119 years after that first 25-cent deposit.
2023: Celebrating 120 years as a locally owned, community-focused Winston-Salem institution.
2024: Joins the Mutuals Matter movement, owned by depositors, not outside investors, so profits stay in the community.

📚 Reopened: The Malloy/Jordan East Winston Heritage Center is back after closing for renovations in April. Updates include fresh signage, a new children’s shelving system, and better Wi-Fi. Fun Fact: Beyond serving as a public library, the Heritage Center also houses local Black history archives, including decades of Atkins High School graduation photos.
