🚴 Gears & Guitars

One of the country's most prestigious cycling events is back this weekend! The 13th annual Gears & Guitars takes over downtown Winston-Salem with professional cycling races, community rides, and free live music.

Friday, May 22

  • Criterium racing (multi-lap races on a closed course with tight corners) on a new route starting at Merschel Park | 6:30-9 PM

  • Free concerts at Merschel Park and Kaleideum, featuring Black Light Idols, River Shook, and Ruston Kelly | 6-9 PM

Saturday, May 23

  • Fondos (long-distance group rides) starting at Bailey Park | 68-mile, 42-mile, 15-mile, and 7-mile distances | Departing from 8-10 AM

  • Criterium racing on the Winston-Salem Classic course, a challenging route that loops up and around Bailey Park | Amateur races from 11 AM - 5 PM | Professional races from 5:15-8 PM

  • Free concerts at Bailey Park, featuring Ears To the Ground, High School Reunion, Gods of Grunge, and Saint Motel | 12-9 PM

  • Food trucks and beer garden (21+)

Good to Know

  • Riders of all levels are welcome to sign up for the fondos or races! Entry fees vary based on the ride.

  • Free parking is available Friday at the 4th Street parking garage and the 5th & Spruce parking lot; free parking is also available Saturday at the Church Street parking garage.

  • 3rd and 4th Streets will close Friday night, and streets surrounding Bailey Park will be closed on Saturday.

  • Bring chairs and blankets to Saturday’s concerts in Bailey Park!

  • Coolers and outside food and alcohol are not allowed.

  • Evening in the Atrium - A taste of live music. Listen to singer-songwriter Gregg Cagno perform while enjoying free desserts by Cafe Gelato and INTI House at 500 W 5th! 5-7 PM*

  • Vinyl Night - Bring your favorite vinyl to Brouwerij DuBois and connect with fellow music enthusiasts. 5-8 PM

  • Book Talk - Frank V. Tursi visits MUSE Winston-Salem to discuss and sign his new book, “Tar Heel Boys of Summer” — a look at North Carolinians who made it to the big leagues. Free to attend; registration required. 6:30 PM

Friday, May 22

  • Gears & Guitars - Watch high-speed cycling races and jam out at free concerts in downtown Winston-Salem. Runs through Saturday.

  • Concert - Country artists Chris Janson and Easton Corbin take the stage at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds! 7:30 PM

  • Bonsai Workshop - Learn the art of bonsai at Coffee Park Airstream and take home your very own tree. 6 PM

  • Dueling Pianos - You request it, they play it. Blazing Keys Dueling Pianos performs at Old Homeplace Vineyard! 7 PM

Saturday, May 23

  • Board Gaming - Shop for games, compete in play-to-win tournaments, or play your own games with friends in Kernersville! Runs through Monday.

  • Pig Pickin’ - It doesn’t get more Southern than slow-roasted BBQ and Lowcountry boil. Gather for a communal meal at Körner's Folly! Registration required. 12-3 PM

  • Tea & Bloom Bar - Create a unique floral tea blend and peony bouquet at My Garden Blooms. 2 PM

  • Freedom Day - Commemorate Salem’s enslaved residents learning of their freedom with guided walking tours and a hands-on brick-making demo at St. Phillips Moravian Church. 10 AM - 4 PM

  • Background: The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) started the Wildflower Program in 1985 to beautify our highways! The idea came from Dottie Martin, wife of former Governor Jim Martin, after she read about a similar program in Texas.


  • Fun Fact: The program is primarily funded through personalized license plate sales. Now you have the perfect excuse to get a colorful license plate.

  • Learn: NCDOT even has a booklet to help identify the planted roadside blooms and naturally occurring wildflowers!

  • Note: The flowers are pretty, but don’t stop on the highway to pick them or snap photos.
